Pianist Alex Guilbert and jazz historian Ken Steiner present a collaborative presentation and discussion on the evolution of early American piano into jazz, blending stories of legendary musicians and Seattle's lesser-known hometown heroes, with a slide show and live piano performances. Join us for a very special evening featuring performances by Seattle Jazz Academy's adult ensembles at Sheridan Market. SJA's ensembles are coached by a professional instructor over the course of a twelve week quarter culminating in a 45 minute performance of classic and modern jazz repertoire.

21+ Jam at Owl n' Thistle (Level Two)

SJA takes over Owl N' Thistle's iconic Tuesday night jam for our first Level Two jam session The event will begin with a set by a the house band before opening up the jam, where students, instructors, friends, and local jazz musicians get to share the stage for an evening of music, improvisation, and camaraderie. Whether you're an experience player or just coming to hang, everyone 21+ is welcome - student or non-student. Grab a bite, sip a bev, and soak in this Seattle jazz staple hosted by SJA. Registration not required.

Meet and play with other students in a supportive, casual environment. Whether you've participated in a jazz jam before or not, this beginner level jam is a fun way to gain some experience playing with others, step out of your comfort zone, and experiment on your instrument. Students and plus ones must be at least 21 years old to attend.

Clinic with Clark Gibson
Advanced Improvisation and Playing in a Combo

Join SRJA Artistic Director candidate Clark Gibson - renowned jazz saxophonist, composer, and educator - for an in-depth clinic on advanced improvisation and combo performance. In this interactive session, Clark will coach one of SJA's intermediate ensembles, offering guidance on phrasing, musical exchange, and creative communication within the combo setting. Observing attendees will gain valuable insight into the processes that shape expressive and cohesive small-group playing, as well as practical strategies to refine their own improvisational approach.
