21+ Jam Night (Level One)

This jam session will focus on playing Level One jazz and blues standards, and is a great way to get to know other students and practice your skills in jamming and live improvisation. All instruments are welcome. Students and plus ones must be at least 21 years old to attend.

At The Sanctuary at Faith Lutheran Church (Maple Leaf)

Gain valuable performance experience by playing or singing a tune you've been working on in your lessons for friends, family, and fellow students. This is an opportunity to practice sharing your music in a supportive setting and to build confidence as a performer. Students are welcome to collaborate with others or perform solo, using this recital as a chance to apply what they've learned and to continue growing as musicians.

Spring Ensemble Performances
Evenings of Saturday, June 20th & Sunday, June 21st
Sheridan Market (Lake Forest Park)

Enjoy the culmination of our Spring Quarter Ensembles as they perform for family, friends, and fellow students. These students will have worked together for ten to twelve weeks with an SJA instructor to learn a set of tunes, develop their skills in ensemble playing, and understand the role of each instrument in a group setting. Registration not required.

DRUM MASTERCLASS WITH LOUIS HAYES
Tuesday, June 23rd at 2:00-3:30pm | SJA Maple Leaf

Legendary drummer Louis Hayes comes to SJA from New York for this concert and masterclass before performing in Seattle at Jazz Alley. An NEA Jazz Master, Hayes’s propulsive hard‑bop style anchored landmark bands led by Horace Silver and Cannonball Adderley and later supported giants like Oscar Peterson, John Coltrane, and McCoy Tyner. His decades as a bandleader and sideman make him an invaluable
teacher for groove, time feel, and ensemble interaction.

21+ SESSION JAM (INTERMEDIATE) AT OWL & THISTLE

SJA takes over Owl N’ Thistle’s Tuesday night jazz jam for this Level Two jam session. The event will begin with a set by the house band before opening up the jam, where students, instructors, friends, and local jazz musicians get to share the stage for an evening of music, improvisation, and camaraderie. Whether you’re an experienced player or just coming to hang, everyone 21+ is welcome — student or non-student. Grab a bite, sip a bev, and soak in this Seattle jazz staple hosted by SJA. Registration not required.

PIANO CONCERT & MASTERCLASS WITH TAMIR HENDELMAN
Saturday, July 25th at 1:00-2:30pm | SJA Greenwood

SJA welcomes award-winning LA based jazz pianist and composer Tamir Hendelman for this special jazz piano workshop. Tamir is recognized for his lyrical touch, dynamic improvisation, and inventive arrangements. He has performed and recorded with artists including Natalie Cole, Barbra Streisand, Tierney Sutton, Dee Dee Bridgewater, and is a longtime member of the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra. He has also collaborated with leading jazz figures including Benny Golson, Sean Jones, Eddie Henderson, Houston Person, Richard Galliano, Claudio Roditi, Graham Dechter, Wycliffe Gordon, and Scott Hamilton. As a soloist, he has appeared with major symphonies performing works such as Rhapsody in Blue and special tributes to Antônio Carlos Jobim.

21+ JAM NIGHT (VOCAL JAM)

This 21+ Jam Night will focus on jamming as vocalists with a band and vice versa. This is a chance for vocal students at SJA to practice singing with a group of players, get experience interacting with a band in a live setting, and mingle with other students at the school. Students (and plus ones) must be over 21 years old to attend.

TEEN JAM SESSION
Sunday, August 16th at 2:00-4:00pm

Calling all teen players ages 13-20! Connect with fellow students, practice your improvisational skills in a group environment, and have fun jamming on your instrument with other teen players. Students are welcome to bring friends to join in.

21+ BEGINNERS JAM
Friday, September 4th at 7:00-10:00pm
SJA Maple Leaf

This jam session is ideal for beginner jazz students to practice playing with other musicians and students. Tunes are called slowly, guidance is provided, and players may use charts while learning basic forms and improvisation. All instruments are welcome. Students (and plus one’s) must be over 21 years old to attend.
