21+ Standards Jam

For students beginning to build a repertoire of standards. Players are expected to know common standards, basic song forms, and take simple solos. This jam session will focus on playing Level One jazz and blues standards and is a great opportunity to meet other musicians and practice improvising in a live setting. All instruments are welcome. Students and plus ones must be at least 21 years old to attend. *Registration Required.

21+ Halloween Jam

All experience levels are welcome at this spooky season jam! Join fellow SJA students and faculty to practice your soloing skills, playing with a live band, and celebrate the haunted eve. Try out improvising in a fun environment or continue building your songbook of jazz and blues standards, plus maybe some spooky tunes! Students and plus ones must be 21 years old or older to attend. Costumes encouraged! *Registration required.

Concert & Masterclass with Rachel Eckroth Trio

SJA welcomes the Rachel Eckroth Trio for this masterclass and concert. Centered on Eckroth’s original music, the trio offers a contemporary take on the piano-bass-drums format, shaped by strong compositions and responsive group improvisation. Its members include pianist and composer Rachel Eckroth, bassist Emma Dayhuff, and drummer Tina Raymond. A Grammy-nominated pianist, Rachel has toured and recorded with St. Vincent, Chris Botti, Rufus Wainwright, and members of David Bowie’s Blackstar band. The trio will work with one of SJA’s adult ensembles in addition to a performance. *Registration required.

Piano Concert & Masterclass with Dave Frank

SJA hosts exceptional jazz pianist and educator Dave Frank for this masterclass and concert. One of the busiest solo jazz pianists and music educators on the scene today, Dave is the author of the best-selling Hal Leonard book and video series, Joy of Improv and Breakthrough to Improv and is a jazz ambassador to the US State Department. Dave was previously an Associate Professor of piano at Berklee College of Music in Boston from 1987-2004 and was one of the co-founders of the New York School of Jazz. As an educator, Dave is well-versed in teaching all modern musical styles, including all forms of jazz, blues, rock, pop, boogie, keyboard accompaniment, fusion, and more. *Registration required. Brass Day!
SJA Maple Leaf

Calling all brass players! Come hang with and learn from the SJA Brass Faculty for a couple of hours. We'll cover many topics, including embouchure, tone production, jazz style, how/what to practice, and more. You'll leave with a smile on your face, lots of new knowledge, and a time-tested practice routine that is customizable depending on how much practice time you have. Bring your horns, 'cause we're gonna play!

Winter Recital

Celebrate the hard work of SJA students at this end-of-quarter recital! Students will perform songs and demonstrate the skills they have honed through dedicated work in private lessons. Recitals are open to all instruments and students of all ages. Participate or come to watch and support fellow SJA students as they show off their skills! Family and friends welcome.

Fall Ensemble Performances

Experience, support, and celebrate SJA’s Fall Quarter Ensembles as they perform sets of tunes that they worked on together for 12 weeks of class sessions and rehearsals. With the guidance and support of an SJA instructor, these students will have cultivated the skills to play in a jazz band, navigating the interplay needed for musical cohesion and collaboration. Family and friends welcome! Registration not required.
